A thorough veterinary examination, including a clinical exam and gait analysis forms the basis for the prepurchase examination, and depending on the results of the initial exam and the horse’s intended use additional tests such as radiography, ultrasonography, blood testing, endoscopy of the airways and a reproductive examination may also be performed. Good and open communication with the intended buyer is very important throughout this process to ensure the buyer understands the implications of all the findings, and is comfortable with which ancillary tests are recommended and performed.
To perform a thorough prepurchase examination it is important to use a consistent approach in a controlled environment.  We strongly prefer to perform these important examinations at the clinic. At Agnes Banks we also offer a restricted prepurchase examination when circumstances preclude a thorough and comprehensive examination, for example when a horse has not been broken in. The limitations of the examination will be discussed at the time of the prepurchase examination.

Prepurchase examinations are an important service that we offer at Agnes Banks Equine Clinic for all types of horses, including elite sport horses, racehorses and pleasure riding horses. At ABEC we follow the Equine Veterinarians Australia (EVA) protocol when performing these important examinations. The purpose of a prepurchase examination is to evaluate the health state of the horse, identify existing and potential problems and then interpret these findings with respect to the animal’s intended use. The intended buyer requests the prepurchase exam, and the results of the examination are solely for the use of this individual. The purpose of the prepurchase examination is not to determine the overall suitability of the animal, which is ultimately the buyer’s responsibility.  The decision to buy the horse should take into consideration the results of the prepurchase exam as well as the financial investment and the suitability of the horse to perform its intended job.
